Question

I’m buying a watchcase for my husband. He has a Rolex and a few other nice watches. My problem is that he is a woodworker and I want to purchase a wooden box that is nicely made, not one that looks like it was mass manufactured in China. I was looking at the Reed and Barton Redford 5.

Answer

Actually the original watchcase, The Reed and Barton Redford 5
Item# RB/596WFS/dC5, is a perfect choice. This watchbox will accommodate watches about 50 mm in diameter. It is solid wood with a walnut trim and a glass window for viewing your fine watches. The tan suede-like interior is a beautiful contrast to the walnut finish.

Another choice is the Wood 6 Watch Display Box by Eilux, Item# EW-3457-MG/dC6, it is solid wood with a Mahogany stain that is well built and beautiful. It also has a glass display window to show off your treasured automatic Rolex and other automatic watches. This box is perfect for automatic watches that measure up to about 45 mm in diameter.

Venlo also makes some beautiful cases. Their wood cases are made in Thailand and their leather products come from Italy.
Item# VE-004-XX/C4 4 Watchcase by Venlo Company is an attractive maple veneer wooden watchcase that comes in two different finishes. The interior is a smooth tan suede that accentuates the beautiful finish of the boxes' exterior. This watchcase will house most watches, even most modern over sized watches.

I understand your concern about products made in China, especially for your husband, who works with wood on a daily basis.
These days you are going to be hard pressed to find products not made overseas. The products I suggested are beautiful and well made.
The problem is people complain about prices, and then complain about quality. You cannot have both cheap prices and hand made US work man quality products. They just do not go hand in hand.
